RockinTech had the pleasure of attending this year’s Produced By Conference, hosted by Paramount Pictures on May 30-31, 2015. It was an extremely fun and amazing opportunity to network and learn from some of the top producers and decision makers in film, television and digital media.

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) is responsible for representing, protecting and promoting the interests of all members of the producing team in film, television and new media. Annually, they host the PGA Awards and the Produced By Conference.

The Producers Guild vetting process determines which individuals are eligible for producer honors in film and television, including the ones presented at the PGA Awards, Oscars, Golden Globes, British Academy of Film and Television Arts and the Monte Carlo Television Festival.

The Produced By Conference is a signature event where attendees can network with Oscar-winning filmmakers, Emmy-winners and other creative entrepreneurs. The event consists of a full weekend of panel discussions, group mentoring and plenty of networking opportunities.

Varun Tandon at Produced By Conference – May 2015

One of the memorable segments of the Produced By Conference was “The Art and Craft of Pitching for Film.”

There were 6 live pitches made to producers. The producers scrutinized and evaluated each pitch in front of the entire audience, explaining why the story or project would not be feasible. This segment provided great insight into what top producers expect in projects, or at least in a pitch.

The entirety of the Produced By Conference left us with 2 valuable strategies involving live presentations:

1. Define my project, or what I do, in 1 sentence. Define it in 3 sentences. Define it in 10 sentences. Make it succinct enough that I never have to finish all 10 sentences while presenting. There should also be enough excitement and questions from whomever I am presenting to.

2. Mental state before I present should be such that I am about to “share” and allow others to be excited about my passion. It is my project/work that I must be excited and passionate enough about to get others involved.

Many thanks to the PGA for inviting us to this exceptionally fun and knowledgeable event.
